Burrowing Owl Information
Burrowing owls are small owls that live in the ground. They do not actually dig their own burrow but take over rodent dens and expand on them.
They eat rodents, snakes, doves, toads, a ton of insects, and anything else they can catch. They can live in colonial groups given enough habitat, can do well in suburbia if the community watches over their space, and are very entertaining.
Unfortunately, as we continue to develop the land, these owls continue to lose their homes.
Many conservation efforts only exclude or trap wildlife for removal before projects but don't provide any supplemental habitat for the owls when they relocate them.
If you ever notice a family of owls on or near a construction site, please follow the links below.
Adult owls may be able to fly away, however the nesting babies are too young to leave the nest are commonly forgotten about, disregarded because they are not seen and get buried alive.
Burrowing owls really don’t just move across the street like some would love to believe and these owls need more advocates.
How to Help Burrowing Owls
How to Protect Burrowing Owls Near You
We recommend flagging habitats in at risk areas to give the owls a voice when nobody is around and urge community members to speak directly to developers, city council members, and authorities such as Game & Fish and USFWS if they feel an active habitat is in danger.
Please take photos of the developer signs when reporting a watch site for Burrowing Owls. Examples below. Click any image below to enlarge it.
We have signage available that you can print if you don't want to make your own.
